Farm Trans & Sustainability: Interview with Adriaan de Bruijne – CEO

“The next decade for Farm Trans will be one of change”

The last three years have been turbulent for the transportation sector. The COVID-pandemic shook up supply chains across the globe. Prices of fuel and other resources have skyrocketed. The labour market is tight. Meanwhile, the effects of climate change are becoming more and more apparent, reemphasizing the urgency for the world to transition to a new, sustainable economy. And as a large consumer of energy, this requires our sector in particular to drastically change the way we operate.

Despite the many challenges ahead, Farm Trans faces the future with confidence. From our founding, we have been a data-driven company, constantly in search of finding the best way to do what we do. Rapid development, innovation and becoming an increasingly multi-cultured team make our work interesting and fun. Change energises us. We are excited about the many solutions to change the way we work. Moving away from fossil fuels to electricity or alternative fuels such as bioDiesel is of course essential. Achieving greater efficiency through state-of-the art planning software using artificial intelligence will also be a cornerstone of a sustainable transportation sector. And the latest driving assistance technology improves road safety and increases comfort for our drivers.

But in addition to new technical solutions, a sustainable transportation sector also requires new ways of thinking. A silver lining of the pandemic was that it challenged many of our assumptions. The difficult circumstances made the entire supply chain more flexible. That same flexibility, that ability to think beyond what we are used to, is also critical in the transition to a sustainable transportation sector. We need to broaden our thinking and find better solutions by working together with the entire supply chain. By truly understanding each other’s business needs, we can find better ways to operate, both for our people and our planet.

That is one of the reasons I am proud to present our first ever sustainability report. By sharing how we are working to become carbon neutral by 2030, we hope to contribute to the conversation in our sector. If we work together, we can achieve remarkable results.
